No servers, no data collection

P2P Meseji is a messaging app that works without servers. Mendelatech has no servers that receive, store or process your messages, your contacts or information about how you use the app. There are no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no trackers. Your data only exists on your device and on the devices of the people you talk to, encrypted.

What data the app handles and where it lives

DataWhere it's storedWho can see it
Your display nameOn your device, encryptedYou and the contacts you add
Your cryptographic key (identity)On your device, encryptedNobody else: the private key never leaves the device
Your Tor address (.onion)On your device, encryptedThe contacts you add (it's inside your QR code)
ContactsOn your device, encryptedOnly you
Messages, photos, videos, voice messages, stickers and filesOn your device and the recipient's, encryptedOnly you and the recipient
Notes (chats with yourself)On your device only, encryptedOnly you: they are never sent
Blocked contacts (their public key)On your device, encryptedOnly you

Everything is stored in an encrypted database (SQLCipher) and in encrypted files, with a key protected by the Android Keystore. The app disables Android's automatic backups, so your data is not uploaded to Google's cloud.

How messages travel

Messages go directly from your device to your contact's device, end-to-end encrypted, over one of two routes:

If your contact is offline, the message waits on your device until you're both online. There is no intermediate server that stores it.

Bypass censorship (optional, off by default): if you turn it on in your profile, the app reaches the Tor network through bridges that disguise the traffic. With Snowflake, the app contacts the Snowflake broker (through a content delivery network) and public STUN servers, and then connects through proxies run by volunteers; with obfs4, it connects to bridges run by volunteers of the Tor community. These services can see your IP address, but not your messages or who you talk to. None of them is operated by Mendelatech.

Links: links in messages open in your browser, outside Tor, only after you confirm; the website you open will see your IP address.

Permissions used

P2P Meseji uses the following device permissions: camera (to scan contacts' QR codes and to take photos you decide to send; the photo is encrypted as soon as it's taken and only goes to the contact you send it to), microphone (only while you record a voice message; the recording is encrypted and only goes to the contact you send it to), notifications (to tell you about new messages, generated on your device), internet and network / Wi-Fi state (to connect with your contacts over Tor or the local network) and a foreground service (so your contacts can deliver messages to you while the app isn't on screen).

Editing and deleting messages

You can edit your messages or delete them for both sides during the first hour after sending them. The deletion is applied on your contact's device when you're both online, and a notice remains saying that a message was deleted. We can't guarantee your contact didn't take a screenshot or a copy first.

Temporary messages

In each chat you or your contact can turn on temporary messages (1 hour, 1 day or 1 week), and both of you see that they are on. Each device deletes them on its own: the sender's once that time has passed after delivery, and the recipient's once it has passed after reading them. While they are on, the app blocks screenshots and screen recording in that chat, doesn't show their content in notifications or in the chat list, and doesn't let you save their files. This doesn't stop someone from photographing the screen with another device, or a modified app from keeping them.

Blocking and reporting

Deleting a contact also blocks them: they can't connect to you, write to you or add you again unless you add them again by scanning their code. Because messages are end-to-end encrypted and never go through our servers, Mendelatech cannot see them or moderate them. You can report a contact from the chat menu: the app opens an email to mendelatech@proton.me with that contact's security fingerprint, and you decide what to write and whether to attach screenshots. We use reports only to handle them and, where the law requires it, to cooperate with the authorities.

Profile photo

If you add a profile photo, it is stored encrypted on your device and sent, end-to-end encrypted, only to your contacts once you're connected. It is never included in your QR code or your invitations, and it is never sent to bots. You can hide it from any contact, and if you remove it, your contacts delete their copy the next time you connect. The photos your contacts send you are stored encrypted on your device.

Bots

A bot is a program that someone else runs on their own computer or server, and you add it like any contact by scanning its code. The connection is end-to-end encrypted just like with a person, but the bot's owner can read everything you send it, and if the bot accepts files, the photos, voice messages and files you send it are saved on their computer. Mendelatech does not run the bots you add, does not receive anything you send them and is not responsible for how their owners use it. The app marks bots with 🤖 and reminds you of this. You can delete and block a bot like any contact.

Files you export

If you save a photo, video or file outside the app, it is saved unencrypted to the location you choose, and from then on it's outside P2P Meseji's control.

Retention and deletion

Data is kept on your device until you delete it. You can delete messages or contacts from within the app. Uninstalling the app permanently deletes your identity, your contacts and your messages. There is no copy anywhere else, so they cannot be recovered.

Legal notice

You are responsible for the content you send and for who you share your QR code with: anyone who scans it can add you as a contact. The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children. Use of the app is subject to the terms of use; see also our child safety standards.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will publish the new version on this same page with its update date.
